Deteriorating Vermont Farmhouse is a miniature performance environment exploring how scenic painting, themed finishes, and material aging can drive visual storytelling. Created over three and a half weeks at SCAD, the project represents Tom’s current focus in production design, themed entertainment, and hands-on scenic fabrication. The environment imagines a weathered Vermont farmhouse shaped by age, moisture damage, neglect, and emotional history. Each space was developed through layered scenic paint techniques, including washes, dry brushing, scumbling, color contamination, staining, and oxidation effects. Finishes were built up gradually to show how surfaces realistically break down over time, from worn furniture and high-touch areas to tonal shifts across walls, flooring, siding, and architectural details. Beyond fabrication, Tom developed a full design package including ground plans, camera and performance mapping, lighting studies, and material documentation. These elements allowed the model to function as a filmable environment rather than a static display, with lighting, movement, texture, and scenic finish working together to support narrative atmosphere. This project demonstrates Tom’s ability to translate story into physical space through scenic painting, miniature construction, surface aging, set dressing, and immersive environmental design.
